CSUN has received seven donations totaling $58,500 from the Boeing aerospace company to support its colleges of Education, Engineering and Computer Science and Business and Economics.

The Michael D. Eisner College of Education received two $10,000 donations, one of which will go toward further development of Valley New High School No. 1, located next to the campus dorms.

“The high school is a small school community, and it’s becoming more career-oriented,” said Laura Lindberg, director of development and alumni relations at CSUN.

A new science program will be implemented to help educate high school students wanting to teach science, she said.

The second of the $10,000 donations will go toward training current teachers in a program called Schools Attuned, developed by pediatrician Dr. Mel Levine and designed to educate teachers about the most effective ways to teach K-12 students. It recognizes the differences between students, and their responses to different teaching methods.

“(‘Schools Attuned’ studies) show how the brain is wired for learning, and how to assess children in classrooms, what their learning strengths are, and how their minds are wired,” Lindberg said.

Approximately five teachers will be trained for it, but it is not known at this time when the training program will begin.

This marks the second consecutive year CSUN has received a Boeing donation for the program. The College of Engineering and Computer Science received a $14,000 donation that will go toward the funding of scholarships, $3,500 to maintain the Boeing Automation Laboratory, and a $5,000 donation to support the Teaching Technology to Teachers program.

“(Teaching Technology to Teachers) is a wonderful program that creates a pipeline from high school to college students,” said Tammy Glenn, director of development and public relations for CSUN’s University Development. “It allows college students to mentor high school students who are interested in engineering.”

The College of Business and Economics received a $10,000 donation to support the San Fernando Valley Economic Research Center. The center collects and analyzes social, economic and demographic information on the San Fernando Valley and other surrounding areas. The center depends on businesses and organizations like Boeing for the majority of its funding.
