CSUN’s chapter of the Latino Business Association currently holds the title of the “Most Outstanding Organization on Campus.”

Out of the more than 250 student organizations at CSUN, the LBA has held this title 10 times over the past 14 years.

“There are so many great organizations on campus that it’s a great honor to be titled ‘Most Outstanding Organization on Campus,'” said Oscar Perez, special events director for the LBA.

Perez said the desire, dedication and determination of the organization toward its members and the local community is being recognized by the campus community through the title.

“It’s great to see that our time and effort are making a difference,” said Rosie Licea, LBA president.

The LBA helps its members make a professional impression in the corporate world. Through club activities, members develop skills in professional speaking, networking and resume writing.

“One of the most important goals of the Latino Business Association is to bridge the gap between the academic and professional world,” Perez said.

Corporate tours and guest speakers give the LBA members the opportunity of not only experiencing what it means to work in a business environment, but also to establish valuable contacts in the corporate world, Perez said.

“By being in the LBA, I’ve (developed) better team working skills,” said Amparo Ostojic, LBA recruitment director. “The workshops on improving skills and resumes have prepared me to enter the business world.”

Members of the LBA also take part in community service events.

“The LBA strives to involve members to participate in community service events for a variety of reasons,” Perez said. “Community service is fulfilling and life changing for those who have helped, and for the person who has received the help.”

Perez said community service could be an important part of personal development. The LBA members participate in high school outreach programs, food drives and campus volunteering.

“We become involved in our local community by adopting a school,” Perez said. “That includes after-school tutoring, as well as adopting a family during the holidays by providing goods and gifts for large families in need.”

To become an active member of the LBA, one must be currently enrolled at CSUN and pay dues to the organization. The fees are $15 per semester, or $20 for the entire year.

Active members must attend at least 50 percent of the general body meetings and attend 50 percent of the LBA events.

Active members should also serve on a committee within the organization, as determined by the officers in charge. Students do not need to be of Latino descent or be business majors.

The LBA general body meetings are held every Monday at 3 p.m. in the University Student Union’s Thousand Oaks Room.
