Water polo loses three of four over difficult weekend

The No. 17 ranked CSUN women’s water polo team, playing a slew of top-ranked teams, lost three of four matches over the weekend at The Beach Tournament in Long Beach.

Playing the host, fifth-ranked Long Beach in the opening match on Saturday, the Matadors gave up four first quarter goals and were unable to mount much of a comeback in the 13-6 loss.

The second match Saturday turned out to be just as difficult as CSUN was matched up against fourth-ranked Hawaii. Again CSUN gave up early goals, three this time, in the first quarter and were unable to recover, losing 9-4.

Sunday turned out to be a little easier for CSUN as they took the first match against UC Santa Cruz 14-6. After a close opening half, the Matadors outscored the Banana Slugs 9-3 in the second half on their way to the victory.

The second match of the day had CSUN matched up with another top-ranked team, No. 19 UC San Diego. After holding on to a slim 4-3 lead through three quarters, CSUN fell apart in the fourth, being outscored 4-1 on their way to a tough 7-5 defeat.

Chari Christopher scored 10 goals in the four games, giving her a team-high 62 goals for the season. Allison Brookes, Erica Bonetti and Christine Cruz all scored four goals. They now have 75 goals combined between the three of them.

Genaye Mowrer scored three goals, Michelle Keeley scored twice, and Ashley Hays scored one goal for the Matadors over the weekend. In addition, sophomore Karen Zeigler scored her first goal of the season in the victory over Santa Cruz.

The Matadors finish their regular season Saturday against Arizona State at Matador Pool.
