Matadors dropped by first-place Gauchos

The women’s basketball team dropped its second consecutive game, losing 56-48 to Big West Conference-leading UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome. The Matadors (6-21, 3-11) are still ahead of UC Irvine (6-22, 3-12) in the standings, clinging to eighth place in the conference.

Unemployment up among students and young adults

California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) released data Friday putting the unemployment rate for the state at 10.6 percent for January, an increase from 9.9 percent in December.
