Spotlight: One student out of 36,000

CSUN business major Lisa Lautman loves drawing and has used the career of Michael Jackson as an inspiration. This year was tough because of the loss of Jackson, who she’s looked up to the last seven years. Since Jackson’s death, she has listened to his CDs so much that they are now beaten up and scratched from use. Raised in California, Lautman became interested in Jackson during her first year at Grant High School. She watched a documentary that focused… Read more

No Farmers Market till next semester for CSUN

The chance for CSUN students to purchase fresh, organic produce on campus is coming. But for now, they will have to wait a little bit longer. A Farmers Market for the CSUN community has been in the works since last semester according to Erica Wohldmann, an assistant professor in the psychology department who is a part of CSUN’s Greening Project and is one of the masterminds behind a plan to improve CSUN’s carbon footprint. The Market — which was approved… Read more

Green paper or green thumbs?

Smells of fried greasy goodness fill the air when you take a walk through the bookstore food court during lunch hour. Hungry students wait in line with hypnotic stares while they decide what to eat. Will it be artery clogging burgers, stitch bursting fried rice, or heart attack heaven onion rings? The cliché “freshman 15” is an understatement. Try the freshman 25. According to a study conducted by the University of New Hampshire, obesity among college students is on the… Read more

Recession Living 101: When looking chic, less is more

I remember as a kid going back to school meant my mom buying me new shoes, socks and underwear, and me begging her for the new clothes that I just had to have. Now my mother doesn’t buy me underwear anymore, and she sure isn’t buying me anything new to wear for the fall. With tuition going up, books to buy and a parking permit to purchase, my part-time barista salary isn’t going to get me near anything designer. However… Read more

Eco-friendly universities

An L.A. Times article titled “Sierra Club’s top 20 eco-friendly colleges include 3 in California” recently caught my attention. Of course, the first university I thought about was not CSUN but UC Berkley. I think it’s the hippie vibe that they exude up north that made me think of them. Berkley ranked eighth. And in case you’re wondering CSUN did not make the list but this is actually not a bad thing. In fact, there was only one Cal State… Read more

CSUN men’s soccer defeats UNLV 3-2 in exhibition game

If the events which transpired in CSUN’s first and only men’s soccer exhibition match are any indication of what the regular season has in store, then Coach Terry Davila’s squad will be as competitive as ever. In the 89th minute of Friday game, redshirt sophomore Rafael Garcia stepped into a free kick from the right corner of the UNLV box and executed a picturesque hooking shot that found the right side of the net, giving the Matadors a 3-2, come-from-behind… Read more

Implementation to Gmail scheduled for mid-semester

CSUN students will be switching over to Gmail during the 2009 fall semester. “The transition is near completion,” said Chris Xanthos, senior director for Project Management and Application Services. “We are finalizing the details. Our target is to switch over mid fall semester.” Xanthos planned to transition to the new e-mail system by the end of the 2009 spring semester but pushed the date back to make sure the transition ran smoothly, he said. CSUN will be following in the… Read more
