Spotlight: One student out of 36,000

For Terrance Stewart, being a leader on campus is not only a way to pad a resume, but it has become his passion, one he discovered during his freshman year at CSUN.   Stewart, a 20 year-old criminology major and president of the Black Student Union (BSU), said that even in high school he recognized the importance of being a good leader by being the captain of his school’s football and wrestling teams. Stewart, also a member of CSUN’s National Association… Read more

Relationships Happen: The complicated truth about dating

During my pre-puberty days my mother used to tell me that I would grow up and meet a wonderful man, fall madly in love and live happily ever after. She would point out the prince charmings in the Disney films and assure me that I would find my own fairy tale ending, minus the poison apple or possessed octopus. What my mother failed to mention was that the process leading up to the happy ending was as complicated, or even… Read more

With the Big Show this Saturday, ticket sales from Ticketmaster and the Associated Students (A.S.) Desperate for a win

After a disappointing Big West Conference opening weekend up north against UC Davis and Pacific, the CSUN women’s volleyball team (4-10, 0-2 Big West) is looking for answers on how to improve its current record. “The success of the team is distributed among all the players and even the coaches,” head coach Jeff Stork said, when asked what the team should focus on during practice. “There is no one area (in which) it all lies.” Whatever it is that the… Read more

CSUN men’s soccer looks to rebound in Big West opener against UCR

Having gone win-less in the Matador Challenge over the weekend, the Northridge (5-2-1) men’s soccer squad was bounced from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America top 25. For a team that had won its previous two tournaments, the scoreless double-overtime tie and 2-1 loss was not the sort of performance that enabled it to sky-rocket to the national poll. But the perfect solution for an angry Matadors team might very well come in the form of today’s conference opener… Read more

Think for yourself, question authority

CSUN Matadors, Students may think the government is fine and working for their best interests. THIS IS SARCASM: You do not have to find the motivation to work to change anything because we have the new messiah, the man with the plan, Barack “Yes We Can” Obama. I have complete faith in President Obama to do everything that is within his current stockbroker’s power to try to reverse this current situation. However, the real power to control money needs to… Read more

Let’s trim the fat. The price of health care could go down if we live a healthier lifestyle

While reading through the Daily Sundial Web site, I came across an article that got me thinking. “Green Paper or Green Thumbs?” is a piece that proposes a solution for obesity, at least on our campus. What caught my eye, however, were the staggering statistics cited and it led me to do some of my own research. “Green Paper or Green Thumbs?” begins by introducing students’ issues with weight and diet; it struck me, however, that this is not a… Read more

Associated Students President Abel Pacheco, hopes to ‘create a community among CSUN students’ with Big Show 9 and other programs

Aside from addressing student concerns, Associated Students (A.S.) is charged with providing spirited programs and events that help create a community feel. One such successful event was recently completed in collaboration with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the University Student Union (USU): the India.Arie concert. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the biggest spirited event of the semester will be coming up. The Big Show, a concert aimed at bringing together the campus. Tickets are only $5 for students, and can… Read more
