Spotlight: One student out of 36,000
Growing up without a male father figure since the age of seven was difficult for CSUN student Anthony Barajas. Despite his loss, the benefits of being raised and growing up around all females served to the 22-year-old’s advantage as he learned things about women that many men are unaware of. “I’m not as hesitant or nervous when it comes to interacting with the female because I’m so used to my sisters,” Barajas said. He has had a head start in… Read more
Shut up about the “two-state solution.” In a classic case of false advertising: President Obama tries to push “separate but equal” on the Palestinians
The “two-state solution” seems like a fair way to solve the problem in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestine. The Israel Lobby (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas all back it so what could be the problem? Israel gets their state and Palestinians get Palestine. Problem solved, right? Unfortunately, a fair “solution” for a Palestinian state has never and will never be offered by Israel. There… Read more
Have a spa day at home on a budget
During these harsh times with work, school and always running around, we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. We forget to set aside a day just to relax and pamper ourselves. But with this recession who’s financially able to spend between $150 and $200 for a day in the spa? I have never gone to a spa, or had a facial or a pedicure. I have only had two manicures in my life and those didn’t come cheap. But I… Read more
CSUN Farmers Market on hold
At the beginning of last week I learned some disappointing news. It was brought to my attention that President Koester removed the CSUN Farmers Market from her agenda. In other words, we are not having a farmers market on campus. This news arrived unexpectedly. Up until now all seemed to be going well. Although there had been some setbacks things were moving forward — slowly – but forward. I don’t have all the details but I am afraid this is another side effect of the budget crisis. What… Read more
Hosted by the Jewish Studies Program, lecture seeks to explain the decline in Jewish population
Since the mid 20th century, when the American Jewish community was at its peak of about six million religious followers, it has decreased to less than two percent of the entire United States population. According to the U.S. Census, only 1.7 percent of the whole population in 2007 was identified as Jewish. This number is expected to decrease more. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Rabbi Elliot Dorff, professor of Jewish Theology at the American Jewish University, is scheduled to discuss the… Read more
CSUN lecture explores the impact of school violence
April 20, 1999 marks an unforgettable tragedy in the community of Littleton, CO. Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, walked into Columbine High School and shot and killed 12 students and one teacher before taking their own lives. Ten years later, the question still lingers – why did they do it? Dave Cullen, author and journalist covering the story at the time, asked that very question to the audience gathered in the Whitsett Room, Wednesday night, Sept. 23 in… Read more
