I am french, please excuse my english.I completely disagree with Joseph line of reasoning. It is true tat the US funded the Taliban. The mistake was probably to rely too much on the Pakistani extremist islamist secret service, without paying atention to the consequences. This, in itself will cause an american defeat.I don' t think the aim of the US is to conquer the Afghan people's country. The aim is to destroy the Talibans, and install a pro western government. This is doable, even if you do not like it.You say "you can't bomb your way to peace and stability": Not true, the purpose of war is to defeat the will to fight of the Taliban, and tou need violence to do it(the trick is to convince the pepople that the culprit are the Taliban, not the pro western forces. With the right strategy, the will to pursue war for 10 or 20 years, and by bringing economic and social progress to the people of Afghanistan it is posibleto win.The problem of course is wether the USA people are resdy to support the cost for so long ?

Pam: I compliment you on the impeccable research you've obviously conducted. However, the Declassified record of the US's previous involvement in Afghanistan is even more crucial. The United States was funding the Taliban all the way up to 2000. The United States funded the mujihadeen in order to throw the Russians out of Afghanistan. In the process they funded expert training to Bin Laden himself. Yes, we were attacked by Al Qaeda on 9-11 which was hosted by the Taliban; but that doesn't give us the right to occupy, destroy, and attempt to conquer the Afghan people's country. Simple solution: try the perpetrators of the 9-11 attacks in a court of law, and leave the rest of the people alone. Killing only begets more killing. You can't bomb your way to peace and stability.
