CSUN hopes to break even before the holiday

The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team is currently 1-2 in the young basketball season but would love to go into their turkey day with a .500 record and go 2-0 in their first road trip of the year. Winning their second game will not come easy, as the Matadors face the University of San Diego Tuesday night. An even record this early in the season may not sound important, but it is. Who wants to sit down at the… Read more

A look back at the 2009 Matador season

When CSUN’s women’s volleyball team kicked off the 2009 season in late August by placing second in the Bronco Invitational in Boise, Idaho, the prospects for the rest of season seemed high. But the following weekend, during the Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by the University of San Francisco, CSUN lost all three of their matches. Northridge finished preseason tournament play at the Nike Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash., with mixed results. Thus began a season-long trend of hard-fought battles and inconsistency… Read more

After a cancer diagnosis, parental abandonment and mental illness, family death and poverty, many would lose hope. Be daring with your fashion

This season’s trends are all about being bold and daring. Runway shows brightened up with fluorescent colors and strong architectural silhouettes. The key in making any one of these looks work lies in creating a balance between the bold pieces and with something more subtle. Feathers have become very popular in the accessories department. Now they are being incorporated into dresses and other garments. When wearing feathers, less is more. Remember to keep it minimal. An example of what you… Read more

Sarah Palin is not so different than we are

Jesse Bob Harper Just to be clear, topping the short list of things I wouldn’t do to win a bet is casting a vote for Sarah Palin. For anything. Even as a joke, like writing her name in to be mayor of San Francisco. The lady frightens me. However, there is one thing I do admire about Mrs. Palin, and it isn’t her looks (however, I would much rather play spin the bottle with Sarah Palin than Mike Huckabee). And… Read more

CSUN almost reaches Hilltoppers

The worst way to end a basketball game is having the referee blow the whistle on a ticky-tack foul when the game is on the line. Too many times do you see the ref send the home team to the free-throw line when they have the ball in the final seconds of the game and they’re down a point or two. Once again the officials took the game out of the players’ hands, and this time Cal State Northridge (1-3)… Read more

Dethklok brings metal and laughs to the Palladium

When I first heard that Dethklok and Mastodon were going to perform at the Palladium on November 20, my first question was: How does a cartoon band play a show? Dethklok is a fictional band featured on the Adult Swim show “Metalocalpyse.” The show, created by Brendon Small, gives metal fans a way to make fun of each other and enjoy good music. At this show, I finally got my question answered. First, though, lets talk about the opening bands:… Read more
