An interpreter is invaluable - and I was wondering if the interpreter who is doing the signing for the class could be videotaped - so that the next class could at least have access to a particular lesson if their interpreter didn't show up on certain days of the class. It seems like such a waste to not capture that valuable teaching and use it to help someone else. It was an interesting but sad article.

I'm a former student at CSUN. This problem is nothing new, they had interpreter shortages during the 1991-1995 year as well. There were about 8 full time interpreters for a 250 deaf student population.

The problem in my opinion is not budget cuts, but fund mismanagement and lack of leadership at the center for deafness. They can't seem to project and prepare services accordingly.

As a result of lack in interpreting services, I dropped out of college in my 4th year. My GPA went down from 3.5 to 2.44 when I left. I'm very disappointed to see this problem still happen today. 15 years later, they should have learned the lesson and prepare for it better, but I don't see it to be the case.

Best wishes to deaf students.

“Those students would be asked to use new technology and or alternate strategies for communication during their non-required student purposes,” Piper said. “We are not restricting this because we want to. We are doing this because we have to.”

Wow. Thanks a lot Terry. Way to cast any blame off of CSUN or the CSU system and throw it onto the faceless "them" who are "FORCING" you to commit social injustices.

Deaf and hard of hearing students deserve and pay for the same education that I receive and why should they not get it?

I swear this is like having George Wallace in charge of our students.

Some hard of hearing students work fine with lipreading and note-taking services -- especially those that are not fluent in sign language.

Is Interpreters a CSUN thing? At my community college they didn't have interpreters but they did have other students who would get paid to take notes on this paper that allowed for two sets of notes on one piece of paper. Does CSUN also do that, or is it Interpreters or nothing?
