CSUN gets back to Big West play

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team (7-11, 2-3 Big West) is coming off a loss, where they had their three-game winning streak on the road snapped by Seattle University, Tuesday night. Fortunately for CSUN, it didn’t hurt them in the Big West standings.

Northridge will try to climb up the standings Saturday night at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (6-10, 3-2).

The defending Big West Champion Matadors started conference play 0-3 but have recently turned it around by beating UC Riverside at home (Jan. 14) and defeating Cal State Fullerton on the road (Jan. 16).

Getting by the Titans was huge for the Matadors in a sense that it gave them their first road win of the season. Also, CSUN gave Fullerton, who came into the game leading the conference standings, their first home loss of the season.

The Fullerton win could have send a message to the rest of the league that Northridge isn’t ready to give up their crown.

“We are not interested in sending messages,” CSUN head coach Bobby Braswell said. “We are just interested in playing good basketball. We reminded the guys that last year we started 3-3 in (Big West)) league.”

If CSUN is trying to have a repeat of last season, they have to get through a pesky Cal Poly team who defeated the preseason favorite Long Beach State by 11 points on Saturday.

The Mustangs are led by senior Lorenzo Keeler, who is averaging 15.1 points per game. Keeler is seventh in Big West scoring just ahead of Kenny Daniels with 14.9.

Cal Poly is averaging 70 points per game, compared to CSUN’s 72 points.

Before the Mustangs square off against the Matadors they play UC Riverside tonight.
