Realistically, no one has an abundance of cash to spend on a new wardrobe this year, and fortunately we don’t need a lot of money to look good.

For women, it’s all about looking classy and stylish, but still having money in the bank for the necessities. Here are five important tips to remember when trying to stretch those already-stretched dollars.

First of all, why not reinvent what is already available? Just because we can’t afford to go out and buy a new outfit for that special occasion, doesn’t mean we have to repeat a previous look.

By using the right accessories, countless options for creating different looks present themselves with clothes that we’ve sported many times before.

For example, try adding a bold scarf or hat to refresh a reoccurring look, or pair different shoes that would normally not be worn with that particular outfit. Jewelry is also a good approach. Multiple bangles, eye-catching earrings, or even a long, statement necklace can revive an old ensemble.

Secondly, try your hand at a sewing machine. Go to a store like Jo-Ann’s Fabrics & Crafts and experiment with inexpensive material. It’s surprising what can be created.

If starting from scratch doesn’t sound like your cup-of-tea, try altering existing pieces from your wardrobe to add a different spin to them. Try shortening an old dress, scrunching the waist with a wide belt, and adding cute heels to breathe new life into that forgotten piece of clothing.

Thirdly, shop discount!

Look for coupons in the Sunday ads of your local newspaper. Many stores such as Kohl’s and Target are always advertising weekly markdowns for their apparel. If designer clothes are what you are looking for, try stores such as Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, Ross, and outlet stores. Finding designer items for half the price is always an option when you know what you’re looking for.

Shopping for items during their off-season is another tip that is recommended. For example, buying a bathing suit in early September is a sure way to find a good price on the perfect bikini. Finding jackets after the cold, winter weather has passed is also a good idea and most stores will practically be giving them away as summer approaches. There are many great deals out there to be had, and it is only fair to take advantage of them.

Fourthly, look for similar items that can be found in both high-end department stores and bargain stores such as Charlotte Russe, H&M, Love Culture, and Forever 21. No one will ever know the difference.

Basic, solid colored sweaters and tees are simple pieces that can be found in a multitude of stores varying in prices. Denim is also a fabric that can be found in most clothing stores for bargain prices. Sure not all jeans can be True Religion or Lucky Brand jeans, but denim is denim and the fit of the pants are more important than the brand name.

Lastly, buy staple items that are versatile and can be worn throughout the year for multiple occasions. You can’t go wrong with basic jeans, cardigans, blazers, and of course that little black dress.

Stay away from buying pieces with loud, busy prints such as plaids, houndstooth, or anything that will leave a lasting impression. People will be more prone to remember you wearing that particular piece of clothing, and the number of times you will want to wear it will be limited.

So remember, it’s not about the amount of money that you spend on a particular outfit, but rather the way it fits, feels, and the boost of self-confidence that you get just from wearing the clothes. As long as you follow that formula, you will always be in style and the compliments that you receive will be endless.
