CSUN tries to get their first winning streak of the year

The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team (4-18, 2-9 Big West) has a chance to win two games in a row for the first time this season. On Saturday the Matadors snapped their six-game losing streak, defeating Cal State Fullerton 66-53 at Titan Gym and now they have their last non-conference game tonight against the University of Arizona.

The Matadors defeated the Titans thanks to center Jasmine Erving scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Also, the team shot 50 percent from the field and not only was the offense good, but the defense held the Titans to 36.1 percent.

Furthermore, the Matador women will have to continue to repeat the steps from the prior game to earn a victory against the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are shooting 43.8 percent from the field and they are averaging 13 assists per game.

Arizona has a trio of players that run the offense. Freshman Davellyn Whyte, a guard from Phoenix, Ariz., is averaging 17.1 points per game and is known for her jump shot, as she is shooting 47.3 percent from the field.

Lastly, the Wildcats have two other go to players Ify Ibekwe and Soana Lucet, who are both forwards.  Ibekwe is from Carson, Calif. and is averaging 14.3 points per game. She is also grabbing 14.3 rebounds a game. Ibekwe’s partner in crime, Lucet, is scoring 13.5 points per game.

Furthermore, the task may look daunting but the Matadors can win if they defend and pound the ball into the center Erving like last game against the Titans.

Other CSUN players that need to have good games are Katrina Thompson and Analee Viena-Lota. The captain Thompson has 74 assists on the season and had a career-high seven assists against Fullerton.

Viena-Lota put in 16 points and six rebounds in her last game. Both players will have to come up with similar efforts to earn the victory.
