Students attend A.S. Fair despite heat

Despite the scorching heat, Associated Students (A.S.) hosted their annual A.S. Fair Tuesday morning at the bookstore lawn. With more than eight tents scattered throughout the area, dozens of A.S. body representatives and volunteers worked together to attract hundreds of students to partake in a number of free giveaways, contests and games to help spread word about A.S. “We always hold the event by the bookstore because students can’t miss it on their way there,” said A.S. President Conor Lansdale, 22, information… Read more

A.S. gives money to Women’s Research and Resource Center for their programs

Associated Students (A.S.) unanimously voted to allocate $9,000 to the Women’s Research and Resource Center (WRRC) for their annual budget. Members of the board discussed how funding the WRRC impacts CSUN students and other organizations. “The ‘Take Back the Night’ event is always successful,” said Neil Sanchez, A.S. vice president. “It has a lot of student involvement.” Sanchez said the WRRC brings positive criticism to the campus and gives students access to important issues. “Ideally, this is the kind of… Read more

LeBron James moves on, everyone should too

Over the summer, in what turned out to be quite possibly the biggest free agency class in NBA history, LeBron James announced his decision. With a controversial one-hour special James announced he will no longer be a member of his homestate team Cleveland Cavaleirs. Instead he chose to join the Miami Heat with Chris bosh and Dwayne Wade. Many fans were upset how James announced his decision and for what seems to be a voluntary opting out of contention for… Read more

Postseason out of reach for L.A.

The 2010 Major League Baseball playoffs are right around the corner and the city of Los Angeles is nowhere near the postseason hunt. The Dodgers and Angels are at least nine games back or more in the West division of their respective leagues and entering the last month of the regular season does not appear to be getting any easier. The defending back-to-back National League West champion Dodgers had high expectations for the season after reaching the National League Championship… Read more

Unlike most students in their second year of college, Michelle Hy has plans that go beyond using her education as a tool to help herself and her family. Maria’s Italian Kitchen leaves a bitter taste

Maria’s Italian Kitchen in Northridge is a quaint little place perfect for a date. Located in a strip mall, there is an outside patio with tables covered in black and white tablecloths and flowers on the table. It’s not decorated with anything too spectacular, but there is a mural of what appears to be an Italian city on one of the walls. Inside there are about 15 to 20 tables and a huge kitchen. I am not a big fan… Read more

New school year hesitations

As we begin a new school year, the air is filled with excitement and anticipation. Yet for many, especially college parents, it can also stir up emotions of dread and anxiety. A new semester means having to shell out cash on an already tight budget for school supplies, school clothes for the kids, textbooks, and babysitters, to name a few. It means searching for child care, figuring out schedules, and having to get your kids out of bed, bathed, dressed,,… Read more

The audacity of leave-us-alone

Barack Obama is a friend of mine. Well, on Facebook. President Obama has seized upon countless opportunities this summer to promote his economic vision for America, defend his spending habits, and excoriate his political adversaries for opposing his fiscal policies – all in the form of status updates. They said he’d bring change to Washington, and he’s exceeding expectations. Seriously, though. I have been experiencing a three-month mental hang-up, as the president of the United States informs me and his twelve million other “friends” that our economy is “moving… Read more

Know your ballot: Vote no on Proposition 23

During my internship at a television network, we were told that in an effort to be more environmentally responsible, the company was no longer going to stock paper coffee cups.  In other words, hang on to your mug because come tomorrow morning, you’re going to need it. Well, I didn’t bring a mug and  I still haven’t brought one in (it’s like remembering to bring my reusable bags to the grocery store – never happens) and I regret it every time I walk… Read more
