Tired of Waiting

Student-parents at CSUN,

Taking a child somewhere that requires waiting can sometimes be a nightmare.  The longer the wait, the worse it can get.  This can really test a parent’s patience.  Trying to keep a little one busy while waiting in a long line or for an appointment can get overwhelming.  Don’t let this ruin your schedule or cause you to cancel an important appointment.  There are several things to do in order to make the waiting time easier.

The most important thing is to let your child know in advance that he or she will be waiting for a while.  Try to make the child understand by comparing the waiting time to the times it takes to get somewhere the child is familiar with.  Also, counting down the time sometimes helps when the it’s shorter than 15 minutes.

Make sure that the child is aware of the rules before the waiting begins.  These rules are mostly the same for all parents, which include:  No whining, no tantrums, no begging for anything, and no lying on the floor.

Bring a few of their favorite books and/or toys with them.  Coloring books and crayons have always worked well with my kids.  Playing cards or games with small pieces can also help entertain their time.  This can also be a good time for you to bond with your child.  Make it a learning opportunity by asking questions to each other about your surroundings.

Don’t forget light snacks (like fruit or crackers), if the wait becomes long, you don’t want either you or your child to get hungry.  Waiting can be stressful, however following some of these small suggestions might help ease the anxiety.
