Junior midfielder Shawna Gordon and senior forward Nikki Myers scored two goals for Long Beach State, which crushed Cal State Northridge’s chances of making it to the Big West Conference final.

For the second consecutive season the Matadors lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament as the 49ers advanced to the next round with a 2-1 victory over CSUN at George Allen Field on Thursday afternoon.

Gordon scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute after CSUN goalkeeper Jacobo blocked a free kick that rebounded to Gordon for the shot.  Senior defender Bo Rael got credited for the assist.

Next, Myers scored in the 80th minute as she ran along the sideline and was dished a pass from junior midfielder Marysol Rosas and knocked it in.

Offensively the Matadors could not find any rhythm scoring until the final 10 minutes of regulation with a goal by senior defender Desiree Cardenas and credited assists to both senior midfielder Erin Kelley and sophomore midfielder Melissa Fernandez. Cardenas cleaned up a corner kick by Fernandez and struck the net

The game was controlled by the 49ers as the team outshot the Matadors 9-7 and had an advantage in corner kicks 6-2. Jacobo collected four saves in the Matador defeat while 49er goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough recorded two.

Even though the Matadors were defeated, head coach Keith West is proud of the journey his team traveled this season.

“I’m real proud of these girls, they were under stress all year long with the pressure from the teams that we played, the travel we did, and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” West said. “Win or lose I want to be with this group.”
