CSUN students take stand for equal marriage

The gender and women’s studies student association (GWSSA) organized a photo shoot  on campus Tuesday to address the issue of marriage equality.  It was similar in concept to the NOH8 campaign, in which people from all walks of life are photographed with their mouths taped shut. John Anderson, gender woman studies major, and president of the GWSSA said it is time to legalize same-sex marriage.

“It’s playing with people’s lives and relationships. We are fed up with it because no decision has been made after two years plus,” said Anderson.

The state Supreme Court agreed on Feb. 16 to hear arguments whether backers of Proposition 8 have legal standing to appeal a federal judge’s ruling that the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Although the NOH8 campaign is more famous, it is expensive to contribute to, Anderson said.  GWSSA’s event was a low-cost way to push the same message forward.  It was free for students to just come out and support equality to say, ‘look we are fed up with it too,’ Anderson said.

“We are here to support our friends and LGBTA.  Everyone is beautiful,” said Valerie Speiv, communication studies, and Danielle Berman, civil engineering majors.
