Associated Students allocated $1,500 to fund the HOPE for Japan benefit concert in a motion that allowed them to indirectly provide aid to the country which has been devastated by massive earthquakes, tsunamis and seeping nuclear radiation from damaged plants for months. Waterless urinals across campus are helping CSUN save millions of gallons of water a year. The water savings is approximately 40,000 gallons per year per urinal, said Lynn Wiegers, executive director of the Physical Plant Management (PPM). “This equates to 10,800,000 gallons of water saved annually,” he said. Local rock band Vas Defrans will take the Plaza del Sol stage Thursday to perform at USU’s noontime concert. Lead singer and songwriter Vincent Coleman said Vas Defrans’ sound is aggressive and describes his vocals as similar to Incubus’ vocals. The unsigned quintet has been around for a while. On April 12, a video surfaced on YouTube of a 6-year-old girl getting a security pat-down by a Transportation Security Administration officer at New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport. A week earlier, an 8-year-old boy was given a full pat-down at a security checkpoint at Portland International Airport. Associated Students reduced the budget for the organization in charge of providing students with entertainment, such as concerts, lectures and cultural events free of charge. SPACE, Student Production and Campus Entertainment, had their summer program eliminated for a second year in a row and their ability to sponsor campus events was significantly reduced. The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences will be showcasing student apparel designs for their annual fashion show. “Night of Fashion 2011,” will feature three different student art exhibits throughout the evening. On Friday CSUN will be hosting an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling event for the campus and surrounding community to help people properly dispose of their electronic waste at CSUN parking lot G10 (Lassen and Zelzah). E-waste is any electronic device: cell phones, batteries, cords/wires, ink cartridges, florescent bulbs, TV’s, computers, calculators, MP3 players, etc. These items contain hazardous materials that need to be disposed of properly and should not be placed in normal recycling bins.
