The 2010-11 tennis year has come to an end and the CSUN tennis team won six of the last eight matches.

“This season, we had high highs and low lows. A high point was beating San Diego State in Hawai’i. Some low points were all the injuries to our team,” head coach Gary Victor said.

One key low was senior Nina Jaworowski’s injury, which caused her to be out for almost six weeks. Jaworowski is back and seems to be fully recovered for the conference tournament.

“All of the injuries have given us more opportunities to let our younger players step up and get some quality playing time in. We feel extremely confident as we head into the Big West Tournament, and our doubles team is as good as anyone’s,” Victor said.

The Matadors finished the season with 15 wins and 9 losses, but their conference record is 3-5.

Senior Brooke Doane ended her tennis career at CSUN with a record of 10-12 and 4-4 in the Big West. As a doubles player, she finished the season 20-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference play.

“It was an accomplished season. I will miss everything about tennis, but for now I am just very confident heading into the tournament,” Doane said.

With seniors Doane and Jaworowski leaving, some younger players for Northridge will need to step up and fill big shoes.

Junior Nigora Sirojiddinova is one of the players that will be looked upon as a new leader next year. She, along with Jennifer Sher, will be seniors next year and probably the highest seeded players on the team.

“I hope to improve a lot for next season, especially my physical condition,” Sirojiddinova said. “I am the fourth seed on the courts right now, but hopefully next year I will be moving up.”

Sher, who was recently picked as the Big West Player of the Week, will also be looking to move up her rank on the courts.

Currently at number two right now, Sher went 16-5 overall this season and 6-2 in conference. Sher has been Doane’s best partner in doubles matches, as the two have dominated competition this season, going 15-1 and 6-0 in the Big West.

Many of the players feel that they had some tough losses they should have won.

“The end of the season was much better for us though, and we seem to be in the best shape now rather than before,” Sirojiddinova said.
