Men’s Golf: Matadors post ninth place finish at Big West Tournament

The Cal State Northridge men’s golf team ended their 2012-2013 season on Tuesday afternoon at The Country Club at Soboba Springs for the Big West Championship where they tied with Cal Poly for the ninth spot.

Finishing the first day tied for eighth with a total of 304, the Matadors placed two golfers in the top three. Senior Matt Siporin and junior Kyle Sauer shot an even-par 72 in the first round and trailed the leaders by three strokes.

Unable to make any moves as a team on the second day of play, CSUN slipped backwards in the standings to ninth place after carding a 306. Sauer kept his pursuit of the individual title alive with a one-over 73 that put him in fourth place just five strokes back.

Siporin was right in the hunt for the title also as his two-over 74 was six strokes back of the leaders and in seventh place.

Needing to make progress in the final round, the Matadors shot their worst round of the tournament, a team total of 318.

Sauer shot his worst round of the tournament also, firing a four-over 76 that knocked him out of contention for the title and gave him a tie for eighth place in his first conference tournament. A final birdie-free round of 83 by Siporin bumped him from a top-10 finish into a tie for 25th.

Junior Oscar Sachs finished in 44th at 22-over, junior Ryan Green came in 47th at 25-over and sophomore Steven Molumby rounded out the five golfers for the Matadors with a 49th place finish at 31-over par.

Pacific earned the Big West title after defeating Cal State Fullerton in a one hole playoff.
