Independent film to be screened for Black History Month

As part of the offerings for Black History Month, the Civil Discourse and Social Change Initiative will present a film on Tuesday entitled “Bilal’s Stand.”

The movie focuses on the story of a Muslim high school senior who works at his family’s taxi stand. After he secretly applies to college he must choose whether to take a chance at school or stay with his family’s business.

The film is presented in conjunction with the office of student housing, the office of the vice president for student affairs and the Matador Involvement Center.

The film itself has been screened around the country including the Sundance Film Festival and won an award at the Detroit International Film Festival.

A discussion with the director Sultan Sharrief with follow the screening. This was Sharrief’s first feature length-film and is based on a true story.

According to his website Sharrief, “seeks to develop socially relevant content, while empowering others through the process of filmmaking.”

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Sharrief’s other films have starred celebrities such as Nia Long and Danny Glover.

“Bilal’s Stand” will be shown on Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Northridge Center.
