Valentine’s Day ideas for singles who are ready to mingle

Being single on Valentine’s Day is nothing to be sad about when there are plenty things to do solo. As lonely as the word “single” may seem, there are others who are in the same boat. The ratio of single men to single women in their 20s lies at 1.2 to one, according to the Valentine’s Day Consumer and Actions Survey conducted by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association. This means there is roughly a top for every pot. However, weeping and watching the Notebook at home won’t increase your chances of finding someone (or enjoying your non-committal freedom if dating’s not your thing). Here are several things to do out there, sans-partner:

Located in the heart of the NoHo arts district, this neighborhood cafe, Republic of Pie (ROP), is celebrating its second anniversary and Valentine’s Day together by inviting three local acts to take the in-house stage from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Singles as well as couples are welcomed to enjoy music from the indie folk artists Trish Hosein, The Sweet Potatoes and Jonathan Regie.

“This is such a cool place to meet people and enjoy an intimate conversation,” said Sophie Ni, the booking manager of the ROP, who met her current boyfriend at the cafe.

The couch and table setup create a communal environment that encourages conversation among strangers and friends. Group games such as Apples to Apples are provided by the cafe for guests. Ni suggests they can be a great conversation starter.

ROP guest Dominique Toney keeps coming back for the cafe’s great atmosphere service and pies.

“It’s the perfect neighborhood coffee shop,” Toney said.

The cafe’s most popular dish, banana chocolate cream pie, may soothe a freshly broken heart or perhaps even bring two single hearts together in agreement of how great the dessert is.

DJ Jahkova #Gethappy V-day party
5303 Lankershim Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 91601

Dance the single’s blues away with the #gethappy party at The Federal Bar in North Hollywood. DJ Jahkova, curator and MC of the night, wants to “spread the love” with high-energy, feel-good music and Valentine’s Day party favors for the ladies.

“It’s a celebration of life and the power that music has to lift the mood,” said Jahkova about the premier of her #gethappy campaign.

Jahkova is the founder of “Madam of the Mix,” an organization that hosts all-female DJ open-turntable events in various major cities around the nation including New York, San Francisco and San Diego.

“Ultimately, I want to shine the light on female DJ talent,” she said.

At the top of the night, the #gethappy party will be featuring DJ Keena Turna, one of the organizations Madam Mixers.

Jenny and Jimbob Jewelry – treat yourself
11114 Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601

Everyone deserves to feel special on Valentine’s Day — even singles. Jenny and Jimbob, a kitsch jewelry store, suggests the art of self-love. The store offers their clients the skills to make their own jewelry or have the jewelers create custom pieces.

The custom-made name plate necklace is an item that customers love to have made by the crafters, said Jimbob, jeweler and co-owner of the store. Clients can also call and reserve a jewelry-making class session for a group of friends.

On Feb. 13, the store will also be celebrating their one-year anniversary with a storewide 10 percent discount and palm reading. What better way is there to find out if love lies in the near future?

Social Mingle for Singles
208 Main Street El Segundo, CA 90245

People with an interest in art may find the free Social Mingle for Singles event worth checking out. The get-together will be held at the El Segundo Museum of Art from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Being surrounded by art and being able to talk about it may serve as an icebreaker, said Oksana Lanis, event planner of the mixer.

From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., a hairstylist and makeup artist will be available to women and men interested in quick touch ups before the night begins. Along with art, guests can expect light appetizers and a bar with organic wines.

V-Day Chez Moi
your address

When dealing with a fresh breakup or if you’re just in the mood for a night in, the best way to celebrate the day of love is to spend it with dear friends, showing them how much they matter.

Hosting a V-Day shindig can serve as a way to bring these special people together.

In order to make the preparations as stress-free as possible, it may help to delegate tasks among each other. Potlucks eliminate the burden of one person spending a lot of money and time buying and cooking food. When everyone chips in, everyone feels the love.

Making your friends feel cared for can be as easy as creating personalized Valentine’s Day cards. If you have ever received a homemade card from someone’s little sibling, then you understand the power of cardboard, glue and markers. It’s the thought that counts.
