Brief: Chicana/o studies speaker to offer writing workshop

In celebration of the upcoming 45th anniversary of the Chicana/o studies at CSUN, the department invited award-winning poet and short story writer Xánath Caraza, a professor from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Aside from writing poetry and short stories, Caraza also lectures on foreign languages and literature.

She will cover her future publications and advice she will offer to CSUN students through the creative writing workshop.

“What students will gain from the lecture and workshop is an understanding of the writing process and ways to create a short story and poetry,” said Lara Medina, Chicana/o studies professor. “Not only will students learn about Chicana/o studies culture in writing but strategies on creating a successful writing piece.”

Currently, Caraza writes for three publications including La Bloga, a Chicana/o blog website.

Caraza’s plan for future publications this year include “Silabas de Viento,” a poetry collection and “Noche de Colibríes,” a chapbook of Ekphrastic poems.

The lecture and workshop will take place at Jerome Richfield at 12:30-1:45 p.m.

The lecture and workshop is co-sponsored by the department of gender and women’s studies, the college of humanities and the civil discourse and social change initiative.
