Women’s Volleyball: USD Invitational Recap

CSUN’s (9-3) weekend travels to the Jenny Craig Pavilion  were not spoiled by Saturday’s dominating loss at the hands of the No. 1 ranked Stanford Cardinals (12-0),  because the Matadors finished the USD Invitational with two wins and one loss.

Entering their final match of the weekend tournament, CSUN did not stand a chance in the first two sets against the Cardinal losing 25-10  and 25-12. The Matadors had a more respectable showing in the third set, but they lost 25-21 as Stanford clinched the sweep.

Despite only three kills from senior Casey Hinger against the Cardinals, her and junior Danetta Boykin received all-tournament honors.

The Matadors highlight of the weekend was a win over the No. 19 ranked University of San Diego Toreros (7-5) on Friday. Hinger recorded 13 kills and surpassed the 1,000 career kills mark in CSUN’s first win over San Diego since 1994.

Junior Steffi Miller recorded 41 assists, four digs, and three blocks as the Matadors defeated San Diego in four sets. Boykin got the mach-high in kills, with a career-high 16 kills against the hosting Toreros.

Thursday, the invitational began for the Matadors with an offensive showcase, as they hit .464 against the Eastern Washington Eagles (4-7). The team connected on 45 kills and only 6 errors over the entire match with the Eagles.

Besides recording a match-high 10 kills, senior Natalie Allen compiled four digs and three blocks in CSUN’s sweep of Eastern Washington.

CSUN opens conference play on the road against Cal State Fullerton on September 26.
