A crowded Matadome with a new Blacktop floor set the stage for a CSUN (12-4, 3-1) upset over the No. 21 Hawaii Rainbow Wahini (12-4,3-1) team in the Matadors’ home opener.
The Matadors entered the game 1-15 all-time against Hawaii, who they also shared the Big West Conference crown with last season.
Junior Danetta Boykin and Fellow junior Cieana Stinson carried the team in kills, as Boykin racked up 14 kills and Stinson added 12 kills.
However, senior Casey Hinger had crucial moments in the third and final set of the Hawaii sweep. She finished the game with 10 kills combined with 9 blocks.
The win positions the Matadors at third place in the Big West standings just behind Hawaii and an undefeated Long Beach State 49ers team (13-4, 3-0).
CSUN continues Big West play next weekend as they travel to face the Cal Poly Mustangs and the UCSB Guachos.
