The California State University, Northridge (CSUN) women’s soccer team suffered their second loss of the season, falling 3-1 to the University of Washington Huskies in their first game of the Nike Portland Invitational.

The loss snaps a five game winning streak. The three goals scored by the Huskies was also the most the Matadors have given up all season. In their previous loss to Pepperdine University, they only gave up one goal.

The Matadors would fall behind early 1-0 as the Huskies would strike first behind junior midfielder, Amanda Perez’s goal that came at the 27th minute mark of the first half.

CSUN was unable to score the rest of the half and entered halftime in unfamiliar territory. In each of their past six games, they have never trailed at the half.

The Matadors also were only able to manage two shots the entire half while the Huskies attempted seven.

In the second half, the Matadors would come out much more aggressive, attempting as many shots in the first few minutes as they did the entire first half.

CSUN’s aggressive play would pay off as they tied the game at the 58th minute mark off a goal from senior midfielder, Lyndsey Preston, her first of the season. The goal was assisted by sophomore forward Cynthia Sanchez, who was recently named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

However, the Huskies would answer right back as sophomore forward Shannon Simon found the back of the net only a few minutes later.

Finding themselves trailing again, the Matadors would attempt to even up the game once more but junior midfielder Camille Watson’s shot attempt was saved by Washington’s senior goalkeeper Megan Kufeld.

CSUN had another chance to tie the game up at the 75th minute mark but Preston’s shot was blocked.

The Huskies would put the game away for good at the 84th minute mark following a crucial CSUN foul resulting in a penalty kick. Simon scored the goal for Washington and the Matadors would go down in defeat.

The game was different look for the Matadors who have thus far proved to be a strong defensive team. It was also the first time in the last five games that Sanchez was held scoreless.

The loss drops the Matadors to 5-2.

CSUN will attempt to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the University of Portland Pilots. The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. and is the second game of the Portland Invitational.
