The CSUN men’s and women’s cross country teams began their 2016 campaign with a rough start Saturday as the men’s team finished 7th out of 7th and the women’s team finished 7th out 8th overall at the annual USF invitational.

Senior Rachel Naumann finished with the highest time for the Matadors with a time of 22 minutes and 32.6 seconds, placing 30th in the women’s 600 meters. Sophomore Mario Ramirez placed 52nd overall and finished with a time of 26 minutes and 0.2 seconds in the men’s 8000 meters, with Sophomore Michael Merchan three tenths of a second behind at 53rd overall.

The course was held at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and the event standings were worse than last year’s times at the USF invitational, as the Matador men’s team finished in sixth place and the women’s team finished in fifth overall.

Last year, however, both teams were off to good starts at their first meets. The women’s team placed first overall at the Pepperdine Invitational with the men’s team finishing in 2nd place.

This year’s teams will have to rebound from a tough outing in San Francisco, with the men’s team having four runners place in the bottom 100 out of 119 participants in the race. The woman’s team had five runners place in the bottom half of their race.

The next scheduled meetings for both teams will be at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17 at 7:30 a.m.
