Women’s Volleyball: BYU Classic Recap

Women’s volleyball is one of five CSUN fall sports that will not be playing this season due to COVID-19.

The CSUN women’s volleyball team pulled out a win in their final match of the weekend against the Utah Valley Wolverines taking the first two sets, both with scores of 25-21.

The Matadors concluded the match in the fifth set with the score of 17-15.

CSUN swept away Utah Valley at the start of the match, but appeared to have lost their rhythm in the third and fourth sets when the Wolverines reached a tie, winning with the scores of 25-22 and 25-19. CSUN regained their momentum in the fifth set and took the victory.

Senior outside hitter Julie Haake had a match-high of 18 kills while hitting .102 on 59 swings, and two digs. Following her, was junior outside hitter, Nickeisha Williams, with 12 kills while hitting .176 on 34 swings and six digs.

The Matadors had 13 aces to Utah Valley’s eight, but Utah Valley out-blocked CSUN 20-14.

Earlier Saturday morning, CSUN was not so successful as they took their second loss to the the UNLV Rebels this season.

UNLV came in with a perfect record of 11-0 and swept the Matadors in all three sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.

Matador sophomore outside hitter, Aeryn Owen had the best offensive output as she executed 17 kills while hitting .222 on 45 swings. Haake added eight kills, five digs, and two blocks.

The Rebels out-blocked the Matadors 10-8 and had seven aces to CSUN’s one.

CSUN now heads into Big West Conference play on Thursday Sept. 22 at UC Irvine. The match is set for 7 p.m.
