The CSUN women’s volleyball team lost against the UC Davis Aggies Friday night at the Matadome.

The Matadors won only one out of four sets during the match with set scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-20

Junior Katie Sato scored the first point of the game, giving CSUN an early lead but the Aggies stayed close and took the set away, winning the first by two points, 27-25.

The Matadors came back during the second, wining 25-23 due to the help of senior Julie Haake who had a strong performance with eight kills during that set and 20 overall. Sophomore Aeryn Owens also contributed with 14 overall kills but that wasn’t enough to dominate the Aggies at home.

“They made some adjustments that worked for them and the level of play picked up for both teams”, Haake said. “We could’ve improved on our passing and serving which are the most basic things we can do”.

The Aggies controlled the third set early on with a 6-1 lead and continued to hold the Matadors back in the fourth, with 16 overall blocks and 63 kills in the game.

“Our serve was not as tough and passing as well and this crept into the third and fourth sets,” CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork said. “The team needs to be more in system because once the Aggies noticed that they took advantage of it.”

The Matadors started to shorten the gap during the fourth set thanks to a few kills by Owens but fell short, giving the Aggies their last set victory and the game.

“We still played hard,” Owens said. “Our passing went down and they had more blocks but tomorrow we’ll play harder to win.”

“Our expectation is always to win but we must focus on our quality and train hard to execute,” Stork added.
