Finkelstein gives Israeli-American relations lecture

In a series of lectures last week, Norman Finkelstein, a noted political scholar and a former professor at DePaul University of Chicago, presented a lecture titled, “A Critique on the Walt-Mearsheimer Thesis,” which focuses on the “core” thesis of a work that touches on Israeli lobby ties with American foreign policy.

CSU applications reach half million

As of Jan. 29, California State University colleges have received a record number of 515,448 undergraduate applications for fall 2008 admissions, the CSU administration indicates. This is an increase of 47,967 applications received prior to date from last year.

T-shirts and newspaper censored

Last Thursday, the Grover Cleveland High School newspaper, Le Sabre, published and distributed a special four-page Vagina Day edition that caused uproar on the school campus. It was the word “vagina” in a hot-pink headline, “Have a Happy Vagina Day!” and a labeled diagram of a vagina in the center of the front page of the school’s newspaper that stirred controversy and resulted in the censoring of V-day at the local high school.

Science 5 building, Chaparral Hall, to be built by 2009

Chaparral Hall, CSUN’s new 90,000 square foot science building, is to be completed by May 14, 2009. Construction on the fifth science building began on July 16, 2007. “Now you’re seeing stuff happen out there,” said Ken Rosenthal, manager of construction services.

Matadors struggle in season-opening tourney

The CSUN women’s softball team opened its 2008 season in a three-day tournament Feb. 8 – 10 at the Cathedral City Kickoff at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City. The Matadors struggled in the tournament, only winning one out of the five games they played.

Governor proposes major CSU cuts, tuition increases

As the state of California faces a $14 billion budget deficit, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed a $312.9 million budget cut to the California State University system in the 2008-09 fiscal year. This comes after the CSU system faced a budget crisis a few years ago of a half billion dollars in cuts, which CSU campuses were not able to recover, the California Faculty Association indicates.

Professors discuss effects of global warming

Professors came together Thursday to discuss the problems and solutions pertaining to global warming at the “Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America.” The event took place in the USU Grand Salon, where CSUN professors utilized PowerPoint presentations on the topics and issues they were familiar with.

Black, Hispanic student enrollment increases

Recent data from the Office of Institutional Research shows a significant increase in the enrollment of black and Hispanic students entering CSUN as first-time freshmen this term. The data includes a table that shows the numeric and percentage terms of first-time freshman (FTF) enrollment at CSUN by ethnicity per fall semester from 1993 to 2007.

Black leaders aim to provide solutions

In dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to continue with the civil rights movement, Dr. Norris Dorsey, a business administration lecturer at CSUN, and The Brothers Speaker Series presented a panel discussion titled, “Man-to-Man Action Plan: Actions Speak Louder Than Words!” last Friday in the University Student Union Grand Salon.
