Grassroots border patrol can become influential

T he United States Border Patrol is in a panic about a grassroots movement that has sprung up in southern Arizona. Calling themselves the “Minuteman Project,” a group of roughly 500 volunteers plans on patrolling our southern border in search of immigrants from Mexico who are trying to cross into the U.S. illegally. But far from being a dangerous endeavor, this grassroots movement might turn out to be a worthy project with national policy implications. The Minuteman Project’s mission, according… Read more

Immigrants being pandered to yet again

Latinos are caught smack in between the controversial collision of two of the most “hot-button” issues of the year: Social Security and immigration. Proposed by President Bush, the hotly contended “REAL ID Act,” which tightens U.S. immigration systems so as to achieve maximum homeland security, passed 261-161 in the House just last week. Measures under this bill include a national identification system that denies driver licenses to undocumented immigrants, calls for stricter qualifications for asylum seekers, and also for the… Read more

Evolutionary ‘theory’ is simply that: a theory

As a typical student attending a typical secular university, I am more than familiar with the general consensus regarding the theory of evolution. Evolutionary theory is put forth with such confidence by the academic community that many have come to regard it as unquestioned fact. My humble goal is to question this conception. Consider the recent controversy concerning the teaching of evolutionary theory in public schools. I’m sure many of you have heard of the now infamous stickers placed on… Read more

Bookstore advertisements condescendingly goofy

A phrase as simple as “Wrong book: them, right book: us” seems to be an almost primitive tactic in the world of marketing. But it is apparently enough to sway even the most business-minded student into purchasing a provocatively overpriced book. Walking into the bookstore, students can see Efollett.com’s crudely drawn images plastered on every wall and in every aisle. Obviously, they are trying to tell us something and they assumed that it would be most effective by placing painfully… Read more

Bloggers become new watchdogs in the media

E ason Jordan’s resignation from CNN has seemed to make many people aware of a new revolution that’s taking place. And much like Gil Scott Heron predicted in the 1970s, this revolution will not be televised, and it will not be brought to you by corporate sponsors. Instead, this revolution, against the corporate controlled media, is being waged by computer addicts, who spend hours upon hours holed up in their rooms in front of their monitors, dripping ketchup from their… Read more

Women’s ‘obligations’ expose shortsightedness, sexism

A friend once told me he didn’t think women were entitled to equal rights. “The feminist movement is inconsistent,” he said. “On the one hand, they demand the right to vote, equal pay, and equal opportunity in the work place. On the other hand, they don’t want the same obligations as men.” Specifically, the feminist movement seems to have no problem that women are not required to register for the draft. Why should we grant equal standing to someone who… Read more

Churchill: The new American provocateur

Recently, Dr. Ward Churchill has been getting a lot of media attention for his book “On the Justice of Roosting Chickens.” The section of the text garnering the most negative press is Churchill’s analysis of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, in which he compares workers killed in the World Trade Center with Nazis. However, his argument is far more complex than one of simple name calling, and is too important to be dealt sub par lip service. At worst,… Read more

Free speech becomes partisan game for academia

Academic freedom, rightly understood, is necessary for the function of a university. As investigators, professors must be able to question claims made by conventional wisdom in order to determine the truths behind those claims. They must be free to ask questions without fear of retaliation. This academic freedom, however, has been replaced by a freedom to say whatever one wants without consequences. This view has come to weaken the idea of academic freedom, as well as undermine the very nature… Read more
