‘Burt Wonderstone’ is anything but magical

sfhioga

Growing up I wasn’t a fan of magic. I never understood the appeal of a guy waving a wand around, or pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The wonder never took ahold of me. So going into “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” I was hoping to get a few laughs and maybe even a glimpse into something I had shied away from as a kid. Was I asking too much? Yep. What I ended up getting was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone-… Read more

Director Harmony Korine said the point of  the film “Spring Breakers,” is to show audiences the debauchery of spring break. With “Spring Breakers,” Korine’s mainstream crime thriller, he delivers a critique of this generation’s frat boy culture. St. Patrick’s Day Events Los Angeles

ST. PATRICK’s EVENTS   St. Patrick’s Day may fall on a Sunday this year (it’s on March 17), but that doesn’t mean a Monday morning class is reason enough to stay in this weekend studying, while the rest of Los Angeles is getting down on corned-beef, green beer and Irish Car Bombs. Sure, staying near campus or around the valley would be ideal for some, but the city is truly the place to be for the most anticipated, alcohol-induced celebration… Read more

Revisiting Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films at the Cinematheque

“No End,” a film based in Poland, begins with a shot of a funeral from up above. An agglomeration of candles and people clad in black and flowers fill the frame from end to end. Someone has obviously died, but whom? The scene cuts to a room in a house. There’s a bookshelf with a brilliant red and blue backpack on it, a grand piano and an earthy looking chair all centered around a bed. A man tries to touch… Read more
