Mother’s Day, a modern American holiday created by Anna Jarvis in 1912 where people honor their caregivers is’ coming up this Sunday.
Mother’s Day is also highly commercialized which helped some students remember the day is on the way. Jarvis once said she wanted Mother’s Day to be a day of sentiment. Nowadays, many view it as a Hallmark holiday fashioned around classy restaurants, boutiques and jewelry stores like Zales.
With summer around the corner many CSUN students, faculty and staff are keeping cars at home and buffing up their bikes to take on a nice ride to and from campus. Students who’re riding their bikes to school aren’t only taking advantage of the pleasant weather the Los Angeles area has been experiencing during the past week, but are also getting in shape by riding bikes.
Esha Momeni, a mass communications graduate student who was held in confinement in Iran last fall for 25 days while working on research for the women’s movement, received the first Academic Freedom Award Tuesday night almost seven months after she was apprehended.
Today’s recession is causing students to seek out assistance in more ways than one.
A protest Wednesday afternoon, addressed Sacramento’s decisions to implement budget cuts in the California State University system. This comes as Charles Reed, chancellor of the CSU system is planning to ask the Board of Trustees to approve a 10 percent increase in student fees.
The United States has a terrible history of mistreatment towards African Americans in this country. Although we now have the first black president, I wonder if things have changed that much. As Attorney General Eric Holder said back in February in reference to race relations in the country, ‘Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot in things racial, we have always been, and we, I believe, continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.’
‘ At’ the start of every semester some students shell out over $1,500 in tution fees, some might pay less and others don’t pay at all. However even if a student pays the full amount the state subsidy still pays twice the amount for our education.’
An Iranian American freelance journalist living in Tehran, Roxana Saberi, has been charged with espionage by Iran’s Revolutionary Court.’ She was arrested over two months ago and is being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison.’
In response to the news of Saberi’s conviction, on April 20 Sen. Byron Dorgan [D-ND] said in a congressional hearing, ”hellip;I thought it was a terrible miscarriage of justice.’ Dorgan further said he urges the Iranian government to do the right thing by releasing Saberi.
