Keep the love alive with your plaid

Oh plaid, it was so good in the beginning. Hot and heavy, I couldn’t get enough of you. But now your charm has started to dull, and I wonder if this love affair has ended. Keeping love alive requires time, attention and the willingness to keep things fresh and learn how to constantly reconnect. Here are some steps that will help us reconnect with our beloved plaid, and keep the love alive. Break the “rules” every once in a while:… Read more

A taste of Cuba

As the door opened, a sensual aroma of citrus and garlic called my name. We were welcomed by two gentleman dressed in typical Cuban shirts, Guayaveras, who lead us to our table. They were as authentically charismatic and welcoming as the food. To start the evening, I ordered a Jupiña, an authentic pineapple soda, to quench my thirst. Sodas are not my favorite, but this one was fruity, lightly sweetened and tickled by tongue. As an appetizer, the Versailles Sampler… Read more

Relationships Happen: The complex realm of cheating

I personally don’t believe in cheating.  On tests.  At board games, card games, sports.  On taxes.  On a significant other.  But truth be told, everyone’s cheated at least once in their life, including me.  We all slip up sometime. The saddest part of it all is that society has become somewhat more accepting of cheaters.  At the very least cheating has become so typical, and to a small extent expected, that it’s almost developed into some sort of mini-norm. Media… Read more

How To: Reality TV not so real

Four-year-old girls running around in puffy sequined dresses with fake teeth. Beautiful young people fighting with each other over something that might have happened one night at some club with the ex of an ex. Girlfriends determined to change their boyfriends from unemployed-over-tanned-gel-encrusted-hair-tattooed-immature douche bags to, well, at least a douche bag with a job. If this sounds anything like something you might have seen once, please raise your hand. Now, keep your hand up if this is your idea… Read more

Recession Living 101: Taming the animal print trend

I can’t help but cringe at the phrase “animal print trend.” Tacky Jane of the jungle dresses comes to mind. The truth is animal print can be a fashion disaster, or pleasantly pleasing, depending on how you wear it. Even though it seems as if animal print comes in and out of style every couple of years, it’s always in, whether it be tiger, cheetah, zebra or even giraffe spots. The trick is because animal print is such a bold… Read more

End the night on a Brazilian note

It’s been a long night of club- hopping. The bartender has announced last call. You finish your drink and hop in a cab, wondering what is still open this late at night. The traditional after-club fare are losing their je ne sais quoi. I mean, you can have Moons Over My Hammy only so many times. That is where Bossa Nova comes in. Bossa Nova is a Brazilian restaurant that offers a novel of a menu with a variety of… Read more

Who said we can’t be friends?

What came first, the chicken or the egg? If a tree falls in the woods and there’s no one around, does it make a sound? Can a heterosexual male and a heterosexual female be just friends? Some questions really do require some deep philosophical thinking. Imagine this, you’re walking to class, minding your own business when BAM! You spot the hottest person you’ve seen in a while and you automatically think, “Gee—that really looks like someone I would like to… Read more

How To: It’s time to channel your inner child

Possibly one of my most memorable Christmas memories is waking up to an ocean of gifts in the living room. And I don’t use the term “ocean” lightly. My brother and I had to literally wade through the presents to make our way to the couch. And don’t even get me started on the tsunami of ripped up wrapping paper that shortly ensued. But the most significant thing I remember is being happy. Sure, the only reason I was happy… Read more
