CSUN vs. UC Riverside, Valentine’s Day 5 p.m.

The Highlanders (14-9, 6-5) figure to not have lost much love for CSUN. Following a thrilling double-overtime win over Long Beach State that at the same time helped the Matadors (11-10, 7-3) overtake the No. 1 seed in the Big West Conference, UC Riverside pays a visit to the Matadome looking to push CSUN back down in the standings and avenge an earlier 64-56 defeat at Riverside. The Highlanders are one of three teams tied for third place in the… Read more

Willie Galick – the guard

Galick came up with a defensive rebound and was surprisingly ahead of everyone, so he took off with the ball in a one-man fastbreak. Five seconds later, the ball was lost out of bounds as Galick could only smile at his turnover. Someone in the stands yelled “Willie, you’re a forward, not a guard.” Yeah. He got it. CSUN’s up 48-29 with 11:30 to go in the game.

These Mustangs have a run in them

Cal Poly has outscored CSUN 13-6 to start the second half and cut the lead to 44-29 with 15 minutes to go in the game. No one is sweating it yet, but a couple of Shawn Lewis 3-pointers more and this can get interesting. Well, Lewis just took a seat. Never mind. Now Titus Shelton just tried to stop Tremaine Townsend, but, in trying, almost killed himself (non-literally). Shelton flipped 180 degrees over Townsend’s back. Both big men are fine… Read more

Halftime stats

The Matadors have been superior in every way throughout these first 20 minutes and lead 38-16 at the end of the first half. Mark Hill hit a high runner off the glass to close the scoring for now. The scoring has been a total team effort. No Matador has more than six points. Same goes for Cal Poly. I mean … no Mustang has more than six points. They’re shooting 21 percent from the field.

Not to sound impartial

But I seriously believe Cal Poly’s Titus Shelton is getting mugged in the post at times. Still, he only has two free throws to show for it. Oh well, I guess that’s the home court advantage they talk about. And not to sound impartial again, but Tony Osunsanmi’s free throws aren’t exactly a thing of beauty. He’s 0-2.

Where are the nurses?

Because this is a clinic, a defensive one. The half only has four more minutes in it and Cal Poly has only scored 12 points and is shooting 27 percent from the field. They’re 0-6 from the 3-point line. CSUN’s up 34-12. Lorenzo Keeler at the line. Oof! He almost missed. It’s now 34-14 CSUN.

CSUN in control

The Matadors are making everything they throw in and Cal Poly can’t even make a wide-open 3-pointer. The Matadors lead 24-6 with seven minutes to go in the first half. It certainly looks like a No. 2 vs. a No. 9. Titus Shelton can’t buy a bucket, or a whistle, for the Mustangs.

Jenkins still trying to find a groove

Josh Jenkins has had two turnovers early on and just came off the floor slumping his shoulders and looking down. CSUN’s up 13-6 with 11:47 to go in the first half. Cal Poly missed 10 of its first 11 shots. Now back to the game, where Chaz Thomas almost fell into me.
