Game in the bag.

Cal Poly hasn’t been able to hit one tonight and the result is a 79-66 lead with 30 seconds to play in the game. Rodrigue Mels has been the catalyst offensively in this second half, but his alley-oop pass attempt, in Head Coach Bobby Braswell’s mind, almost completely erased everything he did right tonight. Final score 79-68. Full recap to come.

Cruncher time

Mustangs are within eight, 73-65, and there is 1:55 to go in the game. Matadors have possession of the ball. With it they will … (waits) … … get two free throws. Tremaine Townsend was fouled. He makes both. CSUN up 75-65. 1:34 to go.

Crunch time

Braswell calls for time with his team (CSUN) leading 69-62 with 3:54 to go. Rodrigue Mels has sparked this second-half offense but hasn’t been as sound defensively. Here is, though, going back into the game.

“Sit down, coach”

That was the latest chant of this Cal Poly Student section. Bobby Braswell then proceeded to sit down. The crowd cheered, “yayyyy.” CSUN’s up 69-60 with five minutes to play. In control, but not out of the woods just yet.

Cal Poly running

The Mustangs still have a run in them and this Cal Poly crowd is loving it. The current one is of nine straight points and has cut the Matador lead to 60-53 with nine minutes to go. Kenny Daniels cuts into that. 62-53, CSUN. Or 62-55? Weirdest play I’ve seen. Thomas made a layup as Willie Galick took a charge. Instead of calling the and-one, they gave the Mustang the basket and a free throw to Galick. 64-55 CSUN as… Read more

Who needs cheerleaders?

Kids are better! One little kid pumping his fist at midcourt in the middle of a timeout is what you need to get a crowd rolling. Signed: The Mott Gym.

Drawing near midpoint

The Mustangs have cut into the lead but it’s still double digits, 53-43, with 13:32 to play in the second half. Now Mr. Chaz Thomas makes it a nine-point lead with a free throw. And Rodrigue Mels looking like Manu Ginobili here. He’s driving to the basket and shooting threes like an Argentine.

That wasn’t a foul?

Bobby Braswell asked the refs whether an apparent push of Lorenzo Keeler to Kenny Daniels wasn’t a foul and a fan right here answered for the men in black and white. “No. It’s not a foul. Sit down,” he said. Good stuff. And Rodrigue Mels has scored eight points in less than three minutes in this second half. The CSUN lead is now 17.

Second half starts

With Rob Haynes in the huddle, the Matadors get set to start the second half. Rodrigue Mels is back in the starting lineup for CSUN and he begins the half by making a layup while getting fouled. Free throw’s good. CSUN leads 38-28.
