The Birdkillers

About 4,000 birds were killed by the BP oil disaster last year. That’s a lot of turkey salad gone to waste. Considering 4,000 birds according to the Deepwater Horizon response’s Consolidated Fish & Wildlife Collection Report, it may look like British Petroleum is responsible for one of the greatest avian disasters of the decade, at least. But it was far from the biggest threat to the birds. Collisions with buildings cause 100 million to one billion bird deaths per year…. Read more

Don’t hesitate to go ‘green’

If you don’t like the terms going “green,” eco-friendly, environmentally-friendly, earth-friendly or any other way you spin it, it’s simply judt about taking care of the environment and ourselves. It’s not about money, even though the rest of the world is. Because of this frugal and money-savvy mentality, many are against the movement of organic-made products and environmental-friendly ways. It cost more money to be green and save green. But this should be a way of life and not an… Read more

Recyclable items in your trash

I visited coffee roasting company Larry’s Beans, in Raleigh, North Carolina two months ago and was surprised at their recycling initiatives. The staff already recycled, but what surprised me was their urge to know how efficient they actually are in recycling. To find out they dumped all their trash onto the pavement and went over it. They found out that very little of their trash could be recycled. Then, I heard of businesses and even households doing the same, to… Read more

Would you go into the wild?

Nature is a beautiful place to escape the pressures of urban life, and many of us sometimes feel that we just want to drop everything and live in the wilderness. Christopher McCandles, subject of the book and movie Into the Wild did just that. He gave up on earthly possessions and adventured up to Alaska by hiking, hitchhiking and canoeing. Living off the grid is a very sustainable solution when you hunt for and grow your own meat. McCandles lived… Read more

Gas crunch: my possible transportation alternative is a motor scooter

So many many thing to do and people to see, but so little money for gas for the necessary commutes is the issue. Since January it seems like every other week gas prices have risen, especially here in Los Angeles. Bicycle riding has grown a lot as of late and you can tell by just looking out for cyclists in the city. but how… Read more

Celebrate Earth Day with an upcycle

Like my necklace? Like today’s issue? Too bad we aren’t printed on recycled paper. Ironic isn’t it? How the world can be so green forward and preach about green initiatives, but those who preach don’t practice them. But today’s CSUN Footprint entry isn’t about another guilt trip. but rather a different trip. Today’s entry is a trip down memory road to a previous entry I wrote last semester about an upcycle and D.I.Y project, known as DIY: Female upcycle. (Hey… Read more

You’re guilty, so celebrate Earth Day a little early this year

Personally, I think it is quite sad that we only celebrate the Earth only one day a year. Especially, when we hurt and contaminate it on a daily basis, but nonetheless, at least we celebrate it. Scratch that. As a community we don’t. Well we kind of do, but if I really want to look at the CSUN community, I’m going to have to be hesitant in believe in our community’s green efforts in celebrating Earth Day. I would think… Read more

A little wind and chill on Sunday turned into a  warm and sunny day to bike all around Los Angeles in the first CicLAvia of the year. 2011 CicLAvia brought many bike riders and joggers enjoying the route from Boyle Heights to East Hollywood.
