W-Vball notebook: Despite losses, Matadors still confident entering Big-West season

Having lost two straight games heading into Big-West-Conference play does not seem to faze the Matadors (6-6). CSUN dropped games to UCLA and BYU last week, but the setbacks apparently didn’t do much to diminish its players’ confidence. Freshman middle blocker Casey Hinger is actually quite certain their next game, on the road against UC Riverside, will be a win. “We’re fighting hard and that’s what counts,” Hinger said following CSUN’s 3-1 home loss to BYU on Saturday. “I can’t… Read more

M-soccer Notebook: Co-captain Garcia nearing return to field

Co-captain Rafael Garcia has missed six games this season due to a meniscus tear suffered during CSUN’s preseason match against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Aug. 20, but the senior midfielder remains optimistic and feels he’ll be back before the end of the month. “I should hopefully be back in a week and a half,” Garcia said last week. “It definitely sucks being sidelined.” Garcia said he has been making an effort to get back on the pitch as quickly… Read more

W-Vball: BYU overpowers Matadors in non-conference finale

fafs

BYU and its impressive 10-3 record entered the Matadome Saturday afternoon on the back end of a six-game road trip along with a heartbreaking defeat the prior night at Cal State Fullerton. All signs pointed towards a weary Cougar team and a solid opportunity for the well-rested Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team, which hadn’t played since Monday night, to come out of the match with a win. However, the Matadors (6-6) didn’t seize the opportunity as they dropped the… Read more

M-Soccer: Matadors rally, tie at Bakersfield in double overtime

faf

The Matadors (2-3-1) gave Cal State Bakersfield (2-0-2) a run for their money on Thursday night as they rallied from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw. With the result, CSUN’s 22-game winning streak over CSUB came to an end. The Matadors now hold a 22-0-1 all-time advantage over the Roadrunners. Despite the comeback, CSUN head coach Terry Davila was not all that pleased with his team. “I was disappointed with our flat start,” he said. “We have to… Read more

After finding the back of the net only once in the first four games of the season, CSUN (1-5-1) has picked up the pace offensively with five goals the last three games. CSUN head coach Keith West doesn’t exactly see it as a scoring explosion, though. “We’re starting to score some goals, but it is not a burst,” he said. “The scoring better continue or we’re going to be in for a long season.” When CSUN has multiple goals, it… Read more

W-Vball: CSUN looks to finish non-conference season with home win vs. BYU

CSUN head coach Jeff Stork saw three teams during the Matadors’ 3-0 Monday loss at No. 6 UCLA: the Bruins, the Matadors and … the Matadors again. One CSUN team played up to the level of UCLA, and even beyond. The other didn’t look good enough to make the Bruins’ practice squad. “Consistency is always something we’re trying to achieve,” Stork said. “Production of points, and consistency, which means removing some of the errors we’ve been making.” An avalanche of… Read more

After letting New Mexico score three goals in 70 seconds on Sunday, the Matadors (2-3) are looking to regain control of their season in their road match against Cal State Bakersfield (2-0-1) tonight (7 p.m.). On paper, CSUB stacks up to be a tough team to beat, but CSUN head coach Terry Davila believes both teams are evenly-matched. “The only advantage (CSUB) have on us is that they’re at home,” Davila said. CSUN has to worry about two key players… Read more

Weekly column: America’s Team’s quarterback becomes America’s biggest choker

hey

Only one week’s gone by in the 2011 NFL regular season and we can already see it’s going to be a a year dominated by quarterbacks, even with Peyton Manning out of action. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers did what was expected of them; Cam Newton and Ryan Fitzpatrick went well beyond what anyone anticipated; and then, of course, we have your bottom-of-the-barrel performers like Donovan McNabb. And even worse than McNabb’s 39 total Week-1 passing yards: Tony Romo’s latest… Read more

W-Vball: CSUN’s inconsistencies dooms them at No. 6 UCLA

The mere prospect of taking a single set from a powerhouse had the Matadors feeling chipper midway through the third set of their Monday night match-up against almighty, No. 6 UCLA. Then, disaster. “UCLA woke up and it didn’t end up being our best game,” CSUN middle blocker Casey Hinger said. At times, it looked like it could be a match to remember for CSUN, but “inconsistencies,” as CSUN head coach Jeff Stork deemed it, cheated the Matadors (6-5) into… Read more
