Work continues toward on-campus farmers market

When Erica Wohldmann moved to California she made the conscious decision to vote with her fork.

For the last two years, Wohldmann, an assistant professor of psychology, has dedicated herself to starting a farmers market on campus.

Blues indie band rocks green

The vibration and beats of blues-infused indie rock reverberated through a tiny second floor apartment in Santa Monica. This is where Drew Schwartz and The Watchtowers practice for their up-coming gigs.

One of their upcoming concerts is taking place at Trip Bar in Santa Monica May 20, and all of the proceeds will go toward the environmental beach group, Heal the Bay.[...]

CSUN aware of compost benefits, possibility for future

CSUN’s part in recycling aluminum cans and paper products today is commonplace and composting is not too far behind, as we see the benefits of turning once living things into fertilizer useful in enriching garden soil and houseplants.

CSUN Director of Publications Randy Thomson’s colleagues hail him as having a “passion” for composting.

Composting “contributes less to landfills and saves money,” Thomson said. “About 50 percent of food is thrown away. We can take this food and redirect it to our gardens, lawns and houseplants.”[...]

The U.S. is the number-one trash-producing country in the world, at 1,643 pounds per person per year. In 2008, only a third was recycled, reports the Environmental Protection Agency. With this year celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, there is no better time to do some good for the earth. To help in celebrate this event, here are some of the many ways in which you can ‘go green.’

Think cold
Wash clothes in cold water; most loads don’t need hot water, and 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes into heating. The higher the water temperature, the higher the cost to you and the planet. [...]

A.S. Recycling Center to expand and improve facility, Consulting company paid $75,000 to complete feasibility report, plans must be approved before construction

With paper or plastic, pick neither

Paper or plastic? My head says paper, my dog walking side says plastic, and my heart says neither.

When you look at the facts, it is hard to accept that “paper or plastic” is still a viable option in the retail world. Because consumers are given the option, does not mean that they must take either one; there’s baggage attached to both.

The initial sell of plastic was to reduce the amount of trees destroyed for paper bags. Now that our society continues to improve in the ways of recycling almost anything, plastic appears to be the better option. [...]

Every day on their way to classes or to their cars, students walk by CSUN’s tropical rainforest. Walking by, students see lots of plants, colorful flowers and eight different towers with pictures of rainforest animals on them.

CSUN’s tropical rainforest is equipped with a fuel satellite plant and eight chilling towers. The fuel cell is a plant that generates electrical power without pollution because it only uses hydrogen and oxygen to operate. [...]

Water: Our Thirsty World Exhibit

Water: Our Thirsty World is an exhibit on display at the Annenberg Space for Photography. The exhibit was a collaboration with National Geographic and includes a 20 minute video component.
