After a tough loss against UC Irvine the previous day, the Matadors (19-20) bounced back and grabbed third place in the Big West Conference Tournament with a 6-5 win over UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon and Schaal Aquatics Center. It came down to 6-on-5 power plays Friday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center as the Matadors capitalized on those opportunities and took the opening round of the Big West Conference Tournament against Long Beach State in a 7-5 double-overtime win. After ending the season strong with two wins and big performances from their offense Sunday, the Matadors (17-19, 1-4 Big West) head to UC Davis for the Big West Conference Tournament and face Long Beach State (11-16, 1-4) in the first round Friday. A CSUN attack that came into a Saturday matinee showdown against UC Santa Barbara averaging nearly 10 goals per game was held to less than a third of that in a 5-3 loss to the Gauchos at UCSB’s campus pool.
