Letter to the editor: Mar. 18, 2010

Dear Ms. Squier: I have read and considered your response to the rally and march. I understand your point and concede you made it capably. Your suggestions are sound and your motivations admirable. However, history shows that simply working “within the system”, as you suggest, rarely facilitates lasting change. Only increasing the visibility of a cause can do that. A few examples: -In the Reformation period following the Civil War, freedmen held the vote and were active in government. However,… Read more

Letter to the editor: Mar. 18, 2010

To the Editor, I was so proud of my fellow students March 4 when I witnessed a much larger than expected protest. So many times I’ve been convinced that my generation was apathetic to anything other than electronic products (as another letter pointed out), but Thursday the participation I saw made me smile when the protesters occupied the intersection of Prairie and Reseda. What struck me as odd though was that there was no “connecting the dots” between national and… Read more

Letter to the editor: Mar. 8, 2010

To the Editor, I wanted to comment on today’s walkout. And please note, this is just my opinion. Today I saw the most useless display of energy I’ve ever seen on campus. Students were walking through the quads and halls, yelling and banging on walls and opening classroom doors to disrupt classes. All in the name of protesting and to what purpose? Supposedly to hurt the administration enough to make them realize we as students are tired of the furloughs,… Read more

Christina Villalobos, Special Assistant to the Chief of Police & Public Information Officer said Reseda Boulevard was blocked off because the protesters moved back into the area to rally, during Thursday’s walkouts. 5:36 p.m. On the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Prairie Street students are having a sit in while they chant “Student. Power.” and “We won’t go. Hell no!” Students need to reclaim their voice, said Lilia Tejeda, 20, psychology major. “[Tuition increase of] 10 percent, 30 percent, 32… Read more

Students, faculty react to campus protests

Hundreds of CSUN students took part of a statewide “Day of Action” on March 4 to protest budget cuts. The day began with several students gathering at tables set up by the Coalition of Students and Teachers (C.O.S.T) in front of Manzanita Hall and the Oviatt Library. Several students began to walk out of their classes after they were cancelled by their professors or due to the majority of the class leaving to take part in the day’s event. “We’re… Read more
