CSUN prepares for big game

Coming off a rough weekend in the aloha state, the 10th-ranked CSUN Matador men’s volleyball team looks to get back on the right track this weekend, as it hosts the third-ranked Brigham Young Cougars for two games at the Matadome this weekend.

“We’re looking forward to it,” head coach Jeff Campbell said of facing BYU. “It should be a good challange for us and it will be a good test for us.”

After winning five straight matches over a two-week span, Northridge hit a wall this past weekend, as it got swept in both its matches against the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine at Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center.

Now, the Matadors look to right the ship, but that task will be hard, as CSUN welcomes the powerful BYU Cougars into town. The Cougars come in with a record of 15-4, 11-3 in Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation play and are currently sitting in third place behind top-ranked Pepperdine and second-ranked UC Irvine. The Cougars are led by Yosleyder Cala, who is averaging 4.17 kills a game and currently has 221 kills on the season as well as a 4.17 hitting percentage.

“We know BYU is a really good team,” Campbell said. “They’re a fantastic team that has a lot of experience.”

The Matadome could bode well for CSUN during this all-important showdown with the Cougars. Northridge has not lost at home since Jan. 31, when it fell in five games to Pepperdine, a stretch that has spanned eight games. The first game is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. and game two is Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
