Senior pitcher Bobby Pascal awarded scholarship

Senior CSUN pitcher Bobby Pascal was awarded the 2007 Mike Frick Memorial Scholarship on Thursday in a ceremony at Matador Field prior to the game against UC Riverside. The scholarship is awarded annually to a CSUN baseball player in memory of the former Matador pitcher, who was killed in a automobile accident in 2003.

Frick pitched for CSUN from 1999 to 2001, pitching for a total of 172 innings and striking out 166 batters. Frick left CSUN after his junior year and was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He moved up to Double-A Midland after three seasons. While playing for the minor-league Modesto A’s, Frick recorded 23 saves in one season and was voted by fans to the team’s 30th Anniversary team. Other former Oakland A’s on the anniversary team include Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, Eric Byrnes, and Miguel Tejada.

As part of the pre-game ceremony, Frick’s parents, Gary and Lori, presented Head Coach Steve Rousey with a plague, engraved with Pascal’s name, as well as the names of the past recipients: Drew Aguailar and Alberto Quintana.

The ceremony was also attended by CSUN President Dr. Jolene Koester and Director of Athletics Rick Mazzuto, as well as several of Frick’s former teammates, including J.T. Stottz, Jim Debiase, and Josh Goldberg.
