Track team wins conference title

The CSUN track and field team celebrated a double-victory on Saturday after capturing both the men’s and women’s titles as the 2007 Big West Conference Champions at the Matador Track and Field Complex. It is the second straight title for the CSUN women’s team and the third title since 2004 for the men’s team.

The CSUN men won the championship with 165 points, barely edging out UC Santa Barbara, taking second place with 162.5 points. Cal Poly scored 149 points for third place and Long Beach State cam in fourth with 115 points. For the women, CSUN scored 174 points to win the championship. UC Santa Barbara took second place with 166 points and Long Beach State took third with 146.50. Cal Poly rounded out the top four teams with 129 points.

Senior Deanna Goodwin and junior Dashalle Andrews won multiple individual championships. Goodwin took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.71 seconds and won the 200-meter dash at 23.56 seconds. She was also a member of the first place 4×100 relay team, combining with senior Shauna Hackett, sophomore Dominique Calvin and junior Julie Eze for a time of 44.96.

Andrews won the long jump with a leap of 7.74meters (25-04.75) and the triple jump with a distance of 15.73meters (51-07.25).

Two other members of the women’s team won individual championships. Eze finished first in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 59.94 seconds. Junior Candace Babb won the long jump with a distance of 6.28 meters (20-07.25).

For the men junior Thomas Ross took first place in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 13.98 seconds. The 4×100 relay team of senior Brandon Ruffin, sophomore Bradley Ike, sophomore Andy Morales, and senior Anthony Brown took first place with a time of 40.17 seconds.

Other finishers for the men’s team included Ruffin, who took second in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.56 seconds. Ike finished in 10.65 seconds for fourth place. Ike came in second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.38 seconds. Brown ran the race in 10.70 seconds for sixth place. Junior Kevin Nious placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.77.

It was the 110-meter hurdles race on Saturday that propelled the men’s team into first place, with four Matadors scoring points in the race. In addition to Ross’ first place finish, teammate Brown came in second at 14.11 seconds. Junior Dane Van Buren took fourth place with a time of 14.62 seconds and freshman Robert Robinson finished in 15.31 seconds for sixth place.

Junior Mike Stotland ran the 1500 meter run in 4:04.12 for 11th place. Senior Jacinto Garcia finished in 4:16.84 for 13th place. Sophomore Diego Fernandez ran the 5000 meters in 16:23.51 for 29th place and ran the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:56.92 for 14th place. Senior Jonathan Tan took 18th place in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 33:35.53.

The 4×400 relay team came in fourth place at a time of 3:13.62. The team consisted of junior Ron Weatherspoon, Ross, freshman Josue Garcia, and Nious.

In the men’s field events, CSUN was well-represented in the top long jump and triple jump, following Andrews first place marks. Junior Rolando Felizola took second place in both events, with a distance of 7.48 meters (24-06.50) in the long jump and 15.58meters (51-01.50) in the triple jump.

Other long jump finishers included Ross, who took fourth with his jump of 7.35meters (24-01.50), Robinson took fifth with a leap of 7.23meters (23-08.75). Moore jumped 14.33meters (47-00.25) for seventh place and was followed by sophomore Awet Hagos in eighth place with a leap of 14.10meters (46-03.25).

Senior Ryan Richards took third in the javelin throw with a distance of 61.39meters (201-05). Senior Sean Jones took third in the pole vault at a height of 4.90 meters (16-00.75). Junior Corey Gosser and freshman Anthony Orozco were included in an eight-way tie for fourth at 4.60 meters (15-01.00).

In the shot put, sophomore Alex Butler took sixth with his distance of 16.55 meters (54-03.75).

In the hammer throw, sophomore Cody Pearce took third with a throw of 57.24 meters (187-09). Sophomore Alex Butler took sixth with a distance of 56.27 meters (184.07), Owen Morse jumped a height of 1.90 meters (6-02.75) for ninth place in the high jump.

For the women, senior Deanna Goodwin took first place in the 100-meter dash at 11.71 seconds and also won the 200-meter dash at 23.56 seconds.

Freshman Shelese Ruffin took fifth in the 400 meter dash at a time of 56.76 and junior Krystal Quinn took eighth with a time of 57.83.

Junior Cherie McPherson took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.58.

In the 5000 meter run, Julie Hancock took 20th place with her time of 18:32.40. She took sixth in the 10000 meters with a time of 37:09.88. Freshman Marissa Crook finished in 40:03.96 for 17th place.

Junior Ashleigh McGrew took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a finish of 13.87 seconds. Junior Julie Eze came in fifth at 14.34 seconds. Eze won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.94 seconds. Freshman Vanice Colbert came in third at 62.28.

The CSUN women won the 4×100 relay with a time of 44.96. The team consisted of senior Shauna Hackett, Goodwin, sophomore Dominique Calvin and Eze. The 4×400 relay team came in second with a time of 3:42.17. That team consisted of Eze, Quinn, sophomore Tanisha Cooper and Goodwin.

In the field events, freshman Desirae Gonder took third in the high jump with a height of 1.75 meters (5-08.75). Quinn finished second in the pole vault with a height of 3.80 meters (12-05.50). Junior Candace Babb won the long jump with a distance of 6.28meters (20-07.25). Senior Brittany Ricketts came in second with a leap of 6.20meters (20-04.25). Freshman Shelese Ruffin came in third with a distance of 6.08meters (19-11.50) and sophomore Dominique Calvin took fourth with a leap of 5.94 meters (19-06.00). Senior Brandi Phifer took 10th with a distance of 5.29 meters (17-04.25) and injured senior LaShana Verdon jumped 5.09meters (16-08.50). Babb took eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.64 meters (38-02.25).

Senior Bobbie Patton took third in the shot put with a distance of 14.94 meters (49-00.25). Sophomore Racquel Sola took second in the hammer throw at 56.40meters (185-00). Junior Tatiana Crochet took fifth with a distance of 54.02meters (177-03) and junior Jessica Beach took eighth with a throw of 51.35meters (168-06 ). Patton threw 47.75 meters (156-08 ) for tenth place.
