CSUN loses to Toreros

The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team lost 1-0 in the first game of its current four-game road trip to 22nd-ranked University of San Diego on Friday night.

Torero senior midfielder Leigh Ann Robinson’s goal in the 82nd minute was the difference-maker in the close game. The loss dropped the Matadors to 2-5-1, while the Toreros extended their unbeaten streak to five and improved their record to 6-1-2.

The Matadors had the first great scoring chance of the game near the end of the first half, when junior forward Carrie Faith Murphy found herself beyond the Toreros defense, one-on-one with junior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron. Murphy’s breakaway shot attempt was saved by Cameron, preserving the scoreless game heading into halftime.

The Toreros struck late in the game, putting themselves ahead in the 82nd minute. Robinson took a pass from sophomore midfielder Hallie Huston and put a shot into the right side of the net, past Matador sophomore goalkeeper Kellie Drenner for the 1-0 victory.

Drenner recorded three saves, while allowing one goal in the Matador loss. San Diego goalie Cameron recorded five saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

The Matadors were outshot 11-7 by the Toreros, and had just three corner kicks to the Toreros six. There were a total of just 13 fouls in the game and no offside penalties. Freshman Jasmine Pratt was shown a yellow card in the 81st minute of the game.

CSUN continued its road trip to play Pepperdine on Sunday in Malibu.
