After three matches, the CSUN men’s soccer team finally ended a match without a tie on Wednesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, it ended Wednesday’s match against the UC Davis Aggies with the one thing it could ill-afford at this time – a loss.
The Matadors suffered their first Big West Conference loss, falling to UC Davis 3-1 at Aggie Field. Three different Aggies scored in the match, while CSUN’s lone goal was scored by freshman midfielder Mattias Bonvehi, his first goal as a Matador.
Davis struck first in the 33rd minute when Sule Anibaba converted a penalty kick. The Matadors responded four minutes later when freshman forward Camilo Rojas sent a cross to Bonhevi who put it into the net to tie the game, a tie that held up the rest of the half.
The Aggies broke the game open in the second half though, as Nicolas Lind scored in the 53rd minute and Paul Cain scored in the 67th minute to put Davis up for good. Davis turned it up on offense in the second half, where after attempting four shots in the first half, Davis took nine shot attempts for a total of 13.
CSUN did out-shoot UC Davis, taking 16 shots, eight in each half, but could only find the net once. The Matadors also out-gained Davis in corner kick opportunities 9-6.
Next up for CSUN was a non-conference match on Sunday with a big trip to the East Coast to face the Maryland Terrapins, who two seasons ago captured the national championship.
