Matadors start four-game home stand

The CSUN women’s soccer team starts a four-game home stand this weekend with a non-conference game against Cal State Bakersfield (4-10-1) and a conference game against UC Irvine (9-5-1, 3-1). The Matadors have lost six of their last seven games and need to win their last three conference games to even have a shot at making the post-season.

The Matadors will first face the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at 2:30. Bakersfield is coming off a split weekend, with a loss against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last Friday and a win against Biola University on Sunday. Sophomore forward Alexa Vickroy leads the team with four goals and 8 points overall this season.

The Anteaters of UC Irvine will head into Northridge on Sunday to face the Matadors at 2:30 p.m. The Anteaters are coming off two straight road victories, at Pacific 2-0 and at UC Davis 2-1. They have won three straight and five of their last seven games overall. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere has recorded six shutouts this season, just one shy of the UC Irvine school record. Senior midfielder Frankee Kelly, sophomore midfielder Kate Berrini, and freshman forward Tanya Taylor are all tied for the team lead in goals scored with five each, and total points with eleven.

For CSUN senior midfielder Susie Mischenko leads the Matadors with eight points on the year and freshman Salma Tarik follows with six points. Goalkeeper Kellie Drenner has a 2.21 goals against average for the Matadors, while back-up goalie Ivette Esqueda’s average is 1.96.

The Matadors are currently in last place in the conference with a 1-4-0 Big West record. This Sunday’s match against UC Irvine will be an important conference game for the Matadors who need to win their last three Big West matches to have a chance at slipping into the playoffs.
