Bonhevi blasts one for second Big West win

The CSUN men’s soccer team got their second conference win against UC Riverside on Saturday.

Freshman midfielder Mattias Bonhevi scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute when he caught UC Riverside goalkeeper Charles Alamo out of the box and blasted the ball over his head from about 30 yards out. The goal was Bonhevi’s second this season.

Bonhevi, along with Adrian Lopez, took three shots in th game. Sunghyun Kim took two shots, with one on those goal.

For the Highlanders, Michael Galland and Nathan Patterson each took two shots during the game.

Junior goalkeeper Kevin Guppy recorded his eighth shutout of the season and made two saves.

Highlander goalkeeper Alamo made just one save during the game.

The Matadors took 11 shots suring the game, with two of those on goal. The Highlanders also had two shots on goal, with a total of seven shots taken during the game.

The two teams played a physical game, with CSUN being called for 20 fouls and Riverside collecting 16. Three yellow cards were given to the Matadors, while the Highlanders were booked with one.

Heading into the end of the season, the Matadors’ offensive leaders are freshman forward Camilo Rojas with four goals and Kim with four goals. Junior midfielder Devon Deldo follows with three goals and three assists and freshman forward Rafael Garcia has two goals and two assists.

Kim leads the team in shots on goal with 14, followd by Rojas and Moy Gomez, both with 10.

The Matadors sit in the middle of the Big West conference standings as they approach the end of the 2007 season. CSUN will host UC Irvine Friday at 3 p.m.
