Northridge sweeps Bakersfield 7-0

The Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team capped its regular season with a 7-0 sweep against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday at Matador Tennis Complex. ?The win improves the Matadors’ record to 13-7 for the season.

“It wasn’t very competitive,” said head coach Gary Victor. “It was senior day, so it was a celebration of Kanykey (Koichumanova) and Canna (Furuta).”

Both of the seniors celebrated with wins on Saturday. Koichumanova won her singles match against Kati Lynott 6-1, 6-0 to finish the season with a 10-9 record.

“Kanykey is the most consistent player, and has been our top player for four years,” Victor said.

Koichumanova also won her doubles match with partner Brooke Doane, posting an 8-2 win against Lynott and Kaydee Graham. Koichumanova and Doane finished the season with a 17-2 record.

They could be the best doubles team we’ve ever had,” Victor said.

Furuta also picked up two wins, pairing with Nina Jaworowski to beat Sara Mijwel and Ashlee Thorneycrof 8-3 in doubles, before beating Isabella Kasselstrand 6-0, 6-4 in singles.

Freshman Whitney Paluch won her singles match against Leslie Begley 6-0, 6-0 for her first collegiate victory.

The Matadors head into the Big West Championships at Indian Wells on Friday as the third seed.

“I love our chances. We’re playing really well again,” Victor said.

CSUN is riding a four-match win streak, after bouncing back from five consecutive loses. Victor said the team had gone through a period of “burnout,” but recovered after getting some rest.

“We are about as refreshed as we can be,” Victor said.

First up for the Matadors on Friday will be sixth-seeded UC Davis. CSUN beat the Aggies 4-2 in their conference match on Feb. 24.
