Under the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles has launched a privately-funded campaign to help Angelenos in need during the COVID-19 crisis.
The Angeleno Campaign is meant to provide immediate financial assistance to those who have experienced job loss, reduction in hours and other financial hardships. LA residents can apply for the Angeleno Card, a no-fee prepaid debit card with amounts that will be determined based on household size and household income prior to the start of the Safer at Home order.
The criteria for eligibility for assistance requires households in LA with total annual incomes to have fallen below the poverty level before the COVID-19 crisis and have faced deeper economic hardships due to “at least one household member has lost a job or experienced a reduction in income of at least 50%” according to the website.
Household members who were independently employed such as domestic workers, day laborers, street vendors and seasonal workers in agriculture may be eligible as well. Immigration status will not be considered in determining an individual’s eligibility.
In order for residents to apply, certain documentation is required to provide proof that the household is within the City of Los Angeles. Such documents include a California driver’s license or identification card, a tenant lease agreement or utility bill all with the person’s name and address. Other requirements can be found here.
The Angeleno Card online application can be completed from today, April 14, through April 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on a Google form. Individuals who do not have access to the internet may call 213-252-3040 to apply via phone, though lines may be busy due to the influx of applicants.
According to Garcetti, Angeleno cards will be released to those who qualify starting April 20.
